The Ministry of Education recently revised the requirements for Community Service Hours for the 2020-21 school year. For students graduating in 2020-2021 year, the community involvement graduation requirement will be reduced to a minimum of 20 hours of community service. In addition, the Ministry is providing increased flexibility on how high school students can earn up to a maximum of 20 hours.
Students can accumulate up to 10 hours from paid employment at the discretion of the principal. The school may also waive restrictions that do not allow students to earn hours during the time allotted for instruction on a school day, or duties normally performed in the home. Community service ideas include: walking younger siblings to and from school, helping with homework, helping seniors, picking up litter, organizing virtual fundraising events and facilitating discussions with new community members.
